Why Gulf Cities Are So White

The dazzling white of Gulf cities looks like simple physics — sunlight, reflected. The real story runs through coral, lime, faith, oil and the way traditions acquire their reasons after the fact.

October, Al Fahidi, on the creek side of old Dubai. It is still 32 degrees at ten in the morning, and you are standing inside a merchant's house that a family lived in until sometime in the 1970s. Above you, through a whitewashed gypsum interior, there is a triangle of pale sky. The air in the room is still, earthy, a few degrees cooler than the lane outside — and nobody has switched anything on. Much of that work is done by the walls: coral, cut from the sea, often approaching half a metre thick, and skinned in lime.

That skin is the thing everyone photographs and almost nobody explains.

The story you have probably heard is short and clean: the Gulf is white because white reflects the sun, and reflecting the sun keeps you cool. It is the kind of explanation that is satisfying precisely because it sounds like physics. It isn't wrong. It's just one strand of a thicker rope — and the tidy version, by pulling that strand out front, quietly does the work of the whole. What looks like a single climate solution turns out, on inspection, to be a knot of history, chemistry, faith, economics, and a fair amount of retrospective storytelling.

That pattern — the messy practice first, the clean single reason foregrounded later — is really what this piece is about. The white is just the way in.

Let's take the layers in order.

The physics that everyone half-remembers

Start with the part that is real, because it is real.

A surface's albedo — its solar reflectance — is the fraction of sunlight it bounces back rather than absorbs. Black asphalt sits around 0.05 to 0.10; it drinks almost everything and turns it into heat. A white surface bounces most of it away. The industry's shorthand for roofs, the Solar Reflectance Index, is calibrated so that a standard black roof scores 0 and a standard white one scores 100. Under full sun, that black roof can climb far above the air around it while the white one stays much closer to it. On a roof, over a summer, in a hot city, that difference is real money — reflective roofs are associated with meaningful cuts to annual cooling loads in study after study.

So far, so postcard. Here is the first quiet complication.

That index — the whole elegant 0-to-100 scale — is defined for horizontal surfaces. Roofs. It is not designed for walls, because the calculation assumes sunlight arriving from overhead, and a vertical façade lives in a different geometry. A wall doesn't only protect the room behind it. It throws light and heat sideways — onto the street, onto the pavement, onto the building across the lane, onto the person walking past.

And when researchers model what happens at street level, the tidy story turns subtle. In a careful field-and-simulation study of hot-climate street canyons, Erell and colleagues found that high-albedo surfaces did lower air temperature — and yet could raise the total heat load on a pedestrian, because the sunlight the pale surface no longer absorbed was now being reflected onto the body standing in front of it. Their own conclusion is bracing: in warm environments the pedestrian-comfort benefit is "marginal at best," and highly reflective surfaces may even add to thermal stress. Reflection doesn't destroy heat. It relocates it. The cooler surface and the warmer pedestrian are the same transaction, read from two ends.

Hold that thought — where the reflected light lands — because it comes back at the end, transformed.

The desert is already pale

Now the second complication, and it is the one that unsettles the postcard most gently.

We picture white buildings against a dark landscape, the way a Cycladic village sits against black volcanic rock. That contrast is what makes "white for coolness" feel self-evident. But the Gulf's ground isn't dark. Satellite and ground measurements put the surface albedo of the Sahara-Arabian desert belt somewhere in the range of 0.35 to 0.50 — bright sand can reflect nearly half the light that hits it, roughly comparable to aged concrete and far brighter than soil or grass. And the terrain is not uniform: NASA's reflectance mapping of the region shows everything from dark volcanic rock to brilliant sand across short distances, which is exactly why treating "the desert" as one shade is a mistake.

But where the sand is pale — and along the built-up coast it often is — the gap between a bright wall and its background narrows. Put a freshly limewashed surface, reflecting perhaps 0.8, against a floor already reflecting 0.4, and the wall is no longer a lone beacon in a dark field; it is one bright plane among several. The white still helps. But it isn't a single pale object against a dark world — it is brightness added to a landscape that was already bright, which is not quite the intuition the postcard sells.

Which sharpens the honest question the postcard never asks. If the ground is already reflective, and the walls sit close together, how much of the white is thermal engineering — and how much is something the physics doesn't fully account for?

To get at that, you have to look at what the wall is actually made of. Because the brilliant white familiar from today's photographs was not, for most of the region's history, the dominant appearance of its buildings.

Before white, there was the colour of the sea floor

The old material palette of the coastal Gulf reads like a list of things pulled straight from the shoreline. Coral stone, quarried from the reef, cut into blocks, dried, and stacked into thick walls — often around half a metre, sometimes more — thickest at the base, thinning as they rose. To bind them, a mortar the builders of Dubai called juss bahar, "mortar of the beach" — lime, sand, and crushed seashell. Across Oman and the wider region, a related earthen mix called sarooj — lime, clay, sand, sometimes gypsum — did the sealing work: a facing layer prized because it cured hard and turned largely water-tight. And gypsum, dug from the salt flats near the creeks, went on as plaster and was carved into the fretwork and niches that catch the light in a majlis.

None of that is brilliant white. It is the colour of shell and clay and cut stone — cream, buff, ochre, sand. Walk the restored lanes of Dubai's own Al Fahidi / Bastakiya quarter and the buildings read, in the words of nearly everyone who describes them, as ochre — "the colour of the desert" — not snow. Across the water on the Red Sea coast, accounts of old Jeddah's coral-stone houses describe walls whitewashed in some cases and painted in soft colours in others — cream, yellow, blue — depending on the household and the century. And there's a chemical footnote worth keeping: the impurities in traditional lime tended to produce an off-white, not today's startling white. The lime wasn't there only to be white. It was there to protect: a coat of lime plaster shields porous coral stone from humidity, heat, and salt, the three things most eager to break it down.

And the wall behind the lime was quietly regulating the house on its own, through mechanisms that have nothing to do with colour. The stone's mass soaks up the day's heat slowly; experimental work on heavy traditional walls finds that this high thermal inertia flattens the indoor temperature swing, holding the interior steadier than the wild day-to-night range outside. Lime, for its part, is vapour-permeable and hygroscopic — it lets the wall release moisture rather than trapping it, and it buffers indoor humidity by taking on and giving off water as conditions change. A study of coral-stone dwellings elsewhere found residents insisting they stayed cooler in summer and warmer in winter than the concrete houses that replaced them.

So the wall in Al Fahidi is working on you through several channels — mass, moisture buffering, a breathable lime skin, and, yes, some reflectance. The white is one contribution among several. It was never the whole trick. And in its origins it was applied in colours closer to bone and honey than to snow.

Which means the dazzling white — the tourist-brochure white — is largely something that intensified later. So the tempting next thought is that somewhere, someone must have required it.

The law you'd expect to find

There's a version of this story where the uniformity has an obvious cause: a rule. A building code that says, in effect, paint it white. It would explain a great deal, cleanly.

I went looking for that rule in the most likely place — Abu Dhabi's Estidama programme, the sustainability framework that has shaped new building in the emirate since around 2010 and whose Pearl Rating System new villas are assessed against. If a modern "white requirement" existed in a form I could put my hands on, this is where it would most plausibly live.

It isn't there. Read the Pearl Villa Rating System through and what it regulates is not colour — it's heat, approached from an entirely different direction. The mandatory envelope sets demanding insulation values for walls and roofs; it caps how much solar heat glazing may admit; and it holds window area to a small fraction of the floor. Small openings, well-insulated walls. One of its non-negotiable credits, Outdoor Thermal Comfort, requires that at least half of a plot's walkways, entrances, and courtyards sit in shade at the height of summer. The one place reflectance enters at all is an optional roof credit, asking for a high Solar Reflectance Index — on the roof, where, as we've seen, the index actually applies.

Read as a whole, the document expresses a philosophy, and it is not "reflect the sun." It is closer to: shade it, insulate against it, and don't over-glaze. Whiteness of walls simply isn't its subject.

Now — the honest boundary of that finding, because the chapter can't claim more than it shows. Estidama is one framework in one emirate. The Gulf is many authorities: other municipalities, national codes across several countries, heritage-district guidelines, and the private design manuals that govern master-planned developments — and it is entirely possible that a specific heritage quarter or a particular developer's playbook does prescribe a palette for its own streets. What the primary document lets me say with confidence is narrower and, I think, more interesting than a blanket claim: the region's most prominent sustainability code, the one many people would assume is behind the white, turns out to be about shade and insulation instead. The dazzle it does not explain.

There's a footnote to that roof credit worth pausing on, because it says something true about this particular desert. When researchers tested reflective coatings in the UAE, the reflectance did not hold: an index starting well above 90 fell into the 60s-to-80s within three years, dulled by ultraviolet light, by heat, and above all by dust that seldom gets rinsed away, because rain seldom comes. High-tech white does not stay white here by itself. Which is quietly an argument for the old way. Limewash is a sacrificial coat — it erodes, and the historical practice, documented across many vernacular traditions, was simply to renew it. Maintenance was the technology. The colour was never a one-time decision; it was a habit, repeated — which is worth holding onto, because habits repeated for generations are exactly the kind of thing we later reach to explain with a single tidy reason.

And a habit repeated for generations tends to accumulate meanings that outgrow its original reason. That is the next layer — and the point where I have to be careful about what can be shown and what can only be suggested.

What the white came to mean

There's a version of this article that stops at physics and materials and treats everything after as decoration. I think that underrates how much a colour can carry in a culture — but it's also where an essayist has to mark clearly the line between what's documented and what's interpretation.

Here is what's documented. In Islamic tradition white is widely associated with purity, light, and simplicity — it is the tone of many mosque interiors, and the ihram garments worn by pilgrims at Mecca are plain and undyed precisely so that rank dissolves. That symbolic weight is real, old, and deep.

Here is the interpretation, and I'll own it as mine rather than dress it as fact: it seems likely that a palette already freighted with those associations met a set of practical building habits and reinforced them — that white persisted a little more readily, and spread a little more confidently, because in this cultural setting brightness was never only about temperature. I can't point you to a study proving that a mosque's symbolism dictated a housing quarter's colour; the causal arrow between religious symbolism and everyday architectural palette is genuinely hard to establish, and I'd be overclaiming to assert it. What I can say is that the meaning and the practice ran alongside each other for centuries, available to reinforce one another. Treat that as a plausible reading offered honestly, not a proven mechanism.

And there's a cautionary tale sitting right beside this one, about how confidently we narrate these origins at all.

Almost everyone "knows" why the Greek islands are white and blue: that a 1938 public-health order under Ioannis Metaxas made lime whitewashing compulsory against cholera, and that blue-and-white later hardened into a national aesthetic. The interesting part, documented in the scholarship on Greek heritage identity, is how recent the dazzling white actually is. Nineteenth-century travellers to the Cyclades recorded only sparse whitewashing across the islands; the all-white landscape we now treat as timeless was, that research notes, "a recent story," established largely over the twentieth century and bound up with public-health decrees and, later, national symbolism. The lime was real, its disinfecting and cooling properties were real, and the compulsion was real. What's constructed is the sense that it was always so — the Aegean's brilliant white is younger, and more deliberately made, than the postcard implies.

Which is the whole theme of this piece, surfacing in someone else's islands: we reach for a single clean reason, and the real history is layered, practical, and partly improvised.

But symbolism and old habit, on their own, don't quite explain why white keeps reasserting itself in a region that spent much of the last half-century chasing an entirely different surface. To see why white reads as a deliberate statement in the Gulf today — rather than just an inherited default — you have to look at what it is a statement against.

The glass detour, and the way back

For a stretch of the oil decades, the aspirational surface of the Gulf city was not pale render at all. It was mirrored glass.

The sealed glass tower — cool inside, hot on its skin, dependent on abundant energy and continuous air conditioning — became an image of arrival, a way of showing that the climate could be answered by machinery rather than negotiated with. It was a coherent choice for its moment, and it produced some genuinely striking cities. It was also, in the most literal sense, the inverse of the coral house: where the old wall breathed and stored and released, the glass skin sealed the desert out and ran the cold air continuously.

And here the thread about where the reflected light lands finally ties off — with a twist that reframes the whole "white for coolness" argument. A matte limewashed wall is a soft, diffuse reflector; the extra radiation it throws at a passer-by is modest. A mirror-flat glass or polished-metal façade is another creature entirely, capable of concentrating sunlight rather than scattering it — the burning-glass effect that has, elsewhere in the world, warmed pavements and dazzled drivers enough that cities began writing rules about façade reflectance. Seen against that, the old white wall was the well-mannered surface all along: bright, but soft-spoken; reflective, but forgiving of its neighbours. Where reflection became a genuine problem, it tended to arrive with the mirror, not the lime.

So the current turn back toward vernacular materials — coral, mud brick, gypsum, palm, the revived mashrabiya screen — is not simply nostalgia. It's a correction, and the architects making it are unusually articulate about why.

I want to be precise here, though, because it's tempting to call this a "return to white" and it isn't quite that. Look across the headline projects and the surfaces don't rhyme: some are pale, some are raw earth, some are stone, some are perforated metal. What they share is not a colour but a stance — build with the place, for the climate, in a way that looks like it belongs. "Return to vernacular" is the accurate phrase; "return to white" would be forcing a single shade back onto a story whose real lesson is that there was never only one.

Stand under the dome of the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the distinction becomes physical. Jean Nouvel describes himself, in his own words, as a "contextual architect" for whom the context "isn't only the site" but "a wider historical context — a cultural context" — and he composed the museum as a cluster of low white volumes evoking an Arab medina, a town rather than a monument. But notice what actually does the cooling: not the whiteness of the walls, but the vast perforated dome above them, the rain of light that filters the sun into thousands of shifting points and eases the climate beneath it. The white is the cultural signal — this is a town, this belongs here. The shade does the thermal work. They are two different jobs, and the building is honest about which is which.

A younger generation is pressing further, sometimes turning a sharp eye on the revival itself. Wael Al Awar of waiwai — whose salt-based cement prototype won the UAE pavilion a Golden Lion in Venice — is blunt about the material most of the modern Gulf is built from: "Cement is toxic," he says — meaning its environmental footprint rather than its chemistry — pointing out that when a building comes down, all of it becomes waste. (Cement production alone accounts for roughly eight percent of global CO₂ emissions.) His search is for a genuinely local material, not a local look. And Turki Gazzaz of the Jeddah studio Bricklab puts the uncomfortable question directly: you can dress a building in all the mud brick and coral stone you like, he observes, but if it's a single-family house in a developer's compound, what does that really say about connecting to place? He's talking about cladding. He could be talking about a coat of white. The warning is the same, and it's a good one: a surface can be an honest part of a working building, or it can be a costume worn to look like one. The colour alone won't tell you which.

So why are Gulf cities white?

Because the sand is bright, and lime was cheap, and coral needed a protective skin to survive the salt, and thick walls were steadying the indoor temperature through mass and moisture as much as through any colour on their surface.

Because white, in this part of the world, arrived already carrying meaning — light, cleanliness, a certain quiet — so the practical habit and the cultural resonance were free to reinforce each other.

Because the region spent a few decades demonstrating it could out-engineer the heat with glass and cold air, and is now, thoughtfully, folding some of that ambition back toward walls that breathe.

But underneath all of it is the pattern this piece keeps circling. We look at an old, pale city and reach for one clean reason — white reflects heat — and the reason isn't wrong so much as it's partial. Builders almost certainly noticed that a pale wall stayed cooler than a dark one; that empirical sense is old and needs no modern theory. What's modern is the privileging of that one strand — the habit of letting the physics stand in for the whole story, when the whitewash grew just as much from the materials at hand, from salt and humidity, from faith and thrift, and from the plain fact that a sacrificial lime coat had to be renewed regardless of why it went on.

That may be the most useful thing the white has to teach — less about temperature than about how traditions acquire their reasons. A practice comes first, built from many small necessities. Later generations tend to compress that complexity into a single explanation — and, like a fresh coat of lime, it gets renewed each time we repeat it.
