About this district

This is the historic royal heart of Tehran — the walled Qajar citadel of Golestan Palace and, spilling south from it, the vast covered arteries of the Grand Bazaar. It sits in the dense old city, a world away from the gallery streets uptown: gardens and mirror-halls behind high walls, then miles of vaulted lanes trading carpets, gold, spice and copper. What draws the art-minded visitor is heritage at its most concentrated — a UNESCO palace of Qajar craft, and around it the bazaar's living tradition of making and trading. The layers are centuries deep. The pace is the crowd's.
