What Is Balance in Art?
Visual weight, three classroom types and six named museum works: how artists keep a picture from tipping without mirroring every side.
Balance in art is the distribution of visual weight across a surface or around a form so the whole holds together under the eye. Visual weight is not grams. It is the pull a patch of dark, a saturated colour, a sharp edge, a large shape or a human face exerts on your attention. An artist can match that pull with a twin on the opposite side, or offset it with a smaller, brighter or emptier counterweight. The result can feel still, tense or spinning. The word names that result, not a moral quality of the maker’s life.
Classroom lists usually give three types: symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial. A fourth, sometimes called mosaic or crystallographic balance, describes an even scatter with no single centre of gravity. This page stays with those visual arrangements. What the term names in pictures and objects
Studio teachers inherited the word from a physical metaphor. A beam scale with two pans is balanced when the masses match. A picture has no pans. It has a rectangle, a circle, a wall, a hanging armature. You still talk as if masses sat on either side of an axis, because the eye keeps scoring the field that way. A black square in the upper left will drag you there until something on the right or below pays the debt.
The term belongs with the principles of design, not with the elements. Line, shape, colour, value, texture, form and space are the materials. Balance is one way of organising those materials so they do not collapse into a heap on one side. Unity, emphasis and visual movement are neighbouring jobs; this page leaves them named and fenced.
Writers in English art schools have used “formal balance” for symmetry and “informal balance” for asymmetry. Radial design is a third: elements repeat around a centre. Mosaic or allover design is a fourth classroom add-on: the field is so evenly loaded that no axis does much work (Pollock drips; some tile patterns).
The term does not mean that every successful work is calm. Hokusai’s wave holds while it threatens. Leonardo’s Last Supper holds while the apostles lurch.
How visual weight works
You can weigh a bronze. You cannot put a painted red square on a kitchen scale and get a number that predicts how hard it will pull. Visual weight is a set of regular biases in looking, tested in studios for a long time and later measured, in rough form, by psychologists who track eye movements. The biases are simple enough to use at a desk.
Size pulls. A large shape outweighs a small one of the same colour. Isolation pulls: a single object in a field of emptiness can outweigh a crowd. Value pulls: a dark patch on a light ground, or a light patch on a dark ground, claims more than a mid-tone of the same area. Saturation pulls: a small cadmium red can outweigh a large grey. Complexity pulls: a patterned sleeve outweighs a flat wall. Edges pull: a hard contour outweighs a soft one. Faces and text pull out of proportion to their size, which is why a tiny head in the corner can wreck a still life. Position pulls: the same shape often feels heavier low in the field than high, and heavier on the right than the left for readers of left-to-right scripts, though that last bias is weaker than teachers sometimes claim.
Distance from the axis acts like a lever. A small dark on the far right can offset a large mid-tone near the centre. Studio teachers still use the see-saw image because it is accurate enough: mass times distance. You do not need a formula. You need to notice that a postage-stamp black in the corner is not a small decision.
In three dimensions the metaphor becomes literal and stays visual at once. A Calder mobile will not hang if the physical masses are wrong. Once it hangs, the painted discs still have to satisfy the eye as they turn. A carved figure that leans past its plinth will look as if it will fall even if the stone is stable. Baroque sculptors used that threat on purpose. Conservators who pack sculpture for loan care about the real centre of gravity. Viewers care about both.
Colour here is a weight, not a mixing recipe. A lemon yellow square and a navy square of the same size do not weigh the same. Impasto catches light and reads as heavier than a thin wash. Gallery lighting and file compression change the ledger.
Three types of visual balance
Exam papers like a tidy trio: symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial. American worksheets often add mosaic or crystallographic balance for allover pattern. The types describe an arrangement. They are not a ranking. A 1960s Op painting can be radial. A Gothic rose is architecture first and a picture second.
The types also mix. A portrait head can be nearly symmetrical while the shoulders are not. A rose window is radial in the glass and bilateral in the facade. Mondrian’s colour blocks are asymmetrical; his lines stay orthogonal. Name the dominant strategy, then the exception. These rows are objects you can check against a catalogue page.

Symmetrical balance
Symmetrical balance places similar visual weight on either side of a central axis. The axis is usually vertical. Horizontal symmetry exists in reflections on water and in some decorative bands, but portrait and narrative pictures almost always mean left–right. Formal names in older textbooks include “formal balance” and “bilateral symmetry.” Rotational symmetry belongs with radial design.
Painters use it when they want stillness, ceremony or a theological centre. A Madonna flanked by saints, an emperor on a throne, a Last Judgement with Christ on the axis: the arrangement tells you where authority sits before you read a single attribute. Architecture taught the habit. Cennino Cennini, in the Libro dell’arte around 1400, told mural painters to snap strings, mark centres and keep spaces “symmetrical and equal.” The National Gallery’s research essay on composing the image quotes that passage as workshop practice, not as later theory.
Strict mirroring is a special case. A Rorschach blot is strict. A carved capital with two identical birds is close. Human subjects almost never are. Van Eyck’s couple do not copy each other. Leonardo’s apostles do not. The symmetry is of mass, grouping and architecture. The breaks (a raised hand, a darker robe, Judas isolated) are the narrative. If you call those pictures “perfectly symmetrical” in an essay, you have stopped looking at the breaks.
Asymmetrical balance
Asymmetrical balance places different objects, colours or voids on either side of an axis and still settles the field. Informal balance is the classroom synonym. The see-saw is the usual diagram: a large dull mass near the fulcrum, a small intense mass farther out. Japanese prints, Dutch interiors and French still lifes of the eighteenth century trained European eyes to trust this arrangement long before modernist slogans claimed it.
The advantage is variety. You can tell a story that moves, show a room that is actually lived in, or stack a landscape without building a throne. The risk is a slide into clutter on one side and vacancy on the other. Students often “fix” that slide by adding a random object in the empty corner. A better fix is to change value, crop, or accept a large empty field as a counted weight, the way Hokusai leaves sky around Fuji.
Asymmetry is not a modern invention. It is the default of looking at weather, furniture and walking bodies. What changed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries was the willingness to let the imbalance stay visible as a structure, not hide it under a central figure. Whistler’s mother sits off centre on purpose. Mondrian’s red rectangle occupies a corner on purpose. Both are as calculated as a Gothic tympanum.
Radial balance
Radial balance organises elements around a centre, like a wheel, a flower, a sunburst or a mandala. The centre can be an oculus, a boss, a face, a light source or an empty hole. Repeating units (petals, spokes, angels, geometric cells) keep the weight even as they travel around. Gothic rose windows are the European textbook case because the stone tracery forces the geometry and the glass supplies the colour weights.
The type is older and wider than Chartres. Buddhist and Hindu mandalas, Islamic geometric medallions, Roman mosaic floors, Baroque painted domes and twentieth-century logos all use it. In a dome, the viewer stands under the centre and the design happens in three dimensions. In a print, the centre is a point on paper. In a mobile, the centre is a hook in the ceiling and the radii move.
Radial design can still be uneven. A rose window with a denser narrative cycle on one ring, or with restoration glass of a different hue, will pull. A photographed firework is radial for a frame and then gone. When you label a work radial, check whether the centre is occupied, empty or off true, and whether the rings repeat the same count. Chartres’s west rose is often described as 12-fold; that number is a design fact you can count, not a metaphor.
Six works, read for visual weight
The six works below mix the three types. Two are in situ (Chartres, Milan). Four hang in London, New York, Paris and Zurich. Read each for the axis first, then for the exceptions. Leonardo’s mural is the awkward date: the National Gallery’s 2011 Milan exhibition guide gives about 1492–7/8; many handbooks still print c. 1495–98. The painting remains on the refectory wall of Santa Maria delle Grazie, a ruin of experimental technique, which is why copies do so much of the public work.
Van Eyck’s couple on a central axis
Jan van Eyck signed and dated The Arnolfini Portrait 1434. The National Gallery, London, inventories it as NG186, oil on oak, 82.2 × 60 cm. A man and a woman stand in a reception room. Between them, on the back wall, a convex mirror hangs under the inscription Johannes de Eyck fuit hic. 1434. A brass chandelier hangs on the same vertical. That vertical is the axis.
The symmetry is of placement, not of clone. He is darker, larger in hat and tabard, closer to the left edge. She is paler, piled with green wool, closer to the bed. The bed’s red mass on the right answers his dark bulk on the left. The window and oranges on the left answer the bed and chair on the right as light versus enclosed furniture. The little dog sits near the centre line, slightly toward her, a small dark on the floorboards. The gallery’s own description notes that the room is not a literal survey: the chandelier cannot fit the space it seems to occupy; the mirror is oversized. Van Eyck adjusted the architecture to serve the axis.
Infrared reflectography, published by the gallery, shows that he added the dog, chandelier, chair, beads and shoes late. The figures and the room came first. Balance here is a construction, not a snapshot of a Bruges interior. The famous mirror does double work: it is a narrative device (two men in the doorway) and a bullseye that pins the axis so your eye has a place to rest between the two bodies.
Leonardo’s table and the groups of three
Leonardo painted The Last Supper on the north wall of the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan for Ludovico Sforza. The National Gallery’s exhibition materials date the mural about 1492–7/8 and note that the experimental technique failed within about twenty years. Christ sits at the centre. The vanishing point of the coffered ceiling and the tapestries sits at his right temple, or thereabouts, depending on how you reconstruct the damaged surface. The twelve apostles form four groups of three, six on each side. The table is a long horizontal that locks the lower third.
That is approximate bilateral symmetry used as theology. Christ is the still point. The others explode outward in gesture. Judas, in the group to Christ’s right (the viewer’s left), leans back and is often the darkest jacket in reproductions. The break in the rhythm is the betrayal. Copies, including the early full-scale copy the National Gallery has exhibited, preserve groupings that the wrecked mural only half holds.
Students sometimes call this “perfect symmetry” because a textbook overlay draws a line down Christ. Count the hands, the leaning bodies and the windows. Three windows in the back wall, the centre one framing Christ’s head, are the architectural rhyme. The side groups are rhymed masses, not mirror images. Leonardo’s own belief, as the National Gallery’s artist biography puts it, was that poses and faces should show the “motions of the mind.” Balance here is a cage for those motions, not a substitute for them.
Chartres west rose as a counted wheel
The west rose of Chartres Cathedral is a circular stained-glass window about 12 metres across, usually dated around 1215. American Friends of Chartres, summarising standard French scholarship, describe its subject as the Last Judgement: Christ as Judge in the central oculus, then angels, Elders of the Apocalypse, resurrection and judgement in the surrounding lights. The north and south transept roses (c. 1235 and c. 1221–30) are later, Marian and Christological programmes. Use the west rose when you want the type in its simplest public form: a wheel of glass on the entrance wall.
Radial balance here is structural before it is pictorial. Tracery divides the circle into repeated cells. Light passing through coloured glass makes some cells heavier than their stone neighbours. Blue and red in thirteenth-century pot-metal glass are not equal. A restored pane of a later hue will flash. The design still reads as a wheel because the count of the rings and the occupied centre overrule local accidents.
Stand in the nave and the rose is also part of a larger bilateral facade: two towers (not identical), a row of lancets beneath, a royal portal. The window’s own logic is radial. The wall’s logic is axial. That split is worth naming in an essay. It stops you from treating “the cathedral” as one type of balance.
A photograph taken from the floor compresses the circle into an oval and darkens the lower lights. Judge radial design from a scaffold photograph or a conservation diagram if you can. Count the repeats. If you cannot count them, you are describing a blur, not a rose.
Hokusai’s wave against a small mountain
Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) designed Under the Wave off Kanagawa (Kanagawa oki nami ura), known in English as The Great Wave, about 1830–32, as one of the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The Met’s impression JP1847 is a woodblock print, ink and colour on paper, 25.7 × 37.9 cm. The museum’s object page stresses the compositional trick: Japan’s grandest mountain reads as a small triangle inside the hollow of the crest.
The print is a textbook of asymmetrical balance. The wave occupies the left and top, a huge claw of Prussian blue and foam. Three boats thread the trough, small dark repeats that stitch the lower band. Fuji sits low on the right, pale, almost a second foam-cap. The sky is a graded empty field. Visual weight piles on the left and top; the right is saved by the mountain’s recognisable silhouette (faces and famous shapes pull) and by the boats’ dark, repeated hulls.
Hokusai also uses the rectangle. The wave’s claw points inward, not off the sheet, so the energy returns toward Fuji. A crop that loses the mountain wrecks the ledger. So does a crop that loses the boats. Teachers who show only the claw are showing a fragment with no counterweight.
Impressions differ. Some have a strong yellow sky; some are faded. Prussian blue, an imported pigment the Met’s text flags, sits heavy relative to the pale mountain. When you discuss colour weight, name the impression if you can. The composition remains the same argument: a large unstable mass, a small famous mass, a field of foam as a third term.
Whistler’s mother as a set of rectangles
James Abbott McNeill Whistler painted Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 in the summer of 1871 in his studio at 2 Lindsey Row, London. The Musée d’Orsay holds it (oil on canvas, about 144 × 163 cm). The French state bought it in 1891. The museum’s note stresses the double title: a portrait of the artist’s mother, Anna, and an “arrangement” of greys and blacks. Whistler wanted the musical sense of harmony to outrank anecdote.
The seated figure is a dark, complicated mass left of centre, profile to the left, feet on a stool, white cap and handkerchief as small lights. A black dado runs the width of the wall. A framed print hangs to the left of her head. A heavy curtain occupies the far left. The right side is a large, quiet field of grey wall and floor. Asymmetrical balance here is almost a demonstration diagram: busy dark on the left, empty light on the right, the dado as a horizon that stops the empty field from leaking.
The print on the wall (a Thames etching, the Orsay note says) is a small dark that keeps the upper left from floating. Remove it in your mind and the curtain and figure collapse into one lump. Her profile is a tiny area and a huge pull. That is why the empty right can be so large: the face pays from the left. A still life in the same geometry, without a face, would need more furniture on the right.
Mondrian’s red corner and the small yellow
Piet Mondrian’s Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow (1930), Kunsthaus Zürich, is oil on canvas, about 45 × 45 cm (some catalogues round to 46 cm). The museum’s collection record notes that he painted it for the Zurich architect Alfred Roth and dedicated it on the reverse, in French, to the work of creating and seeking equilibrium in art and in life. That dedication is Mondrian’s philosophy, not a prompt to write about work-life balance. On the canvas, equilibrium is a set of planes.
A large red rectangle dominates, bounded by black bars that sit away from the centre and meet toward the lower left. A blue plane and a yellow plane, much smaller, and several whitish-grey fields complete the set. Kunsthaus commentary (via the Google Arts & Culture object page that quotes the museum) describes the red as the main note and the blue and yellow as counterpoint. Smarthistory’s classroom essay on a closely related 1930 composition uses the same language: relational opposites, asymmetry, pure planes.
Count the weights. Red is huge and sits high-right in the usual reproductions. Blue is smaller and darker, a dense plug. Yellow is smaller still and high in chroma, a spark. White and grey are the large quiet fields that keep the primaries from shouting each other down. The black bars are not outlines only. They are heavy, and their unequal lengths stop the square from reading as a window grille.
Mondrian’s Neo-Plastic programme, as MoMA’s artist texts summarise it, aimed at a universal language of horizontal, vertical and primary colour after the First World War. You need to notice that the biggest colour is not in the middle and that the picture still sits. Use the Zurich 1930 canvas (inv. 1987/0028), not MoMA’s later Composition in Red, Blue, and Yellow of 1937–42, if you cite these dimensions and Roth’s dedication.
How contemporary artists still count weight
After 1945 the classroom trio did not retire. Scale changed. The gallery became a third term: a mobile answers air currents, an installation answers your body, and a photograph of either is one freeze that may lie. The examples below are dated objects, not a survey of “the contemporary.”
Living painters who fill a canvas edge to edge are often working the mosaic option. A slight density shift or one interrupting mark is then an asymmetrical correction inside an allover field. Name both strategies when that happens.
Mobiles, grams and painted discs
Alexander Calder’s hanging mobiles make the metaphor physical. Marcel Duchamp supplied the name “mobile.” MoMA’s Lobster Trap and Fish Tail (1939), painted steel wire and sheet aluminium, is a commissioned hanging work whose plates seek equilibrium in currents. The National Gallery of Art, Washington, holds related 1930s pieces, including Untitled (The McCausland Mobile) of 1937. Physical mass must balance or the object fails; painted colour then reweights what you see. A red disc far out on a thin arm behaves like the studio see-saw. Kinetic sculpture is the one studio where grams and visual weight share a job.
Grids, sheds and artificial suns
Bridget Riley’s Movement in Squares (1961), tempera on hardboard, 123.2 × 121.2 cm, Arts Council Collection ACC6/1962, is a grid that contracts. The Arts Council’s note is precise: square height stays constant; minute changes in width create a contraction toward the centre.
That is not radial in the Chartres sense. It is an allover field with a hidden axis of compression. The eye looks for a fulcrum and finds a pinch. Optical painting uses the ledger to buckle a flat board without a depicted object.
Cornelia Parker’s Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View (1991), Tate, suspends shed fragments around a bulb, a frozen radial burst. Olafur Eliasson’s The Weather Project (2003) in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall used a semi-circular lamp-sun and a mirrored ceiling to complete a disc. Type-names still apply. The moving part is now you.
Empty paper, contrapposto and the counted void
Painting tutorials talk as if balance were only a problem of filled rectangles. Drawers and sculptors meet the same ledger with different blanks. A sheet of paper is already a weight: the reserve, the untouched field, can pay for a dense hatch in the opposite corner. East Asian landscape painting made that payment a style. European academic drawing often feared it and filled every inch. Neither habit is a law. Both are choices you can name.
In sculpture, contrapposto is a bodily analogue of asymmetrical balance: weight on one leg, a hip that rises, a shoulder that drops. The bronze or marble may be physically stable on its plinth while the depicted body looks mid-step. A recumbent tomb figure can be bilaterally even and still read as dead weight. Calder, as above, joins the two senses. A carved capital with paired birds is closer to ornament’s symmetry. Say which sense you mean before you borrow the word from a painting class.
How to identify balance when you look
Start with the frame. Note the format: tall, wide, round, irregular, a room, a hanging. Draw, in your head or on a phone screenshot you will delete, a vertical axis at the midpoint and a horizontal at the midpoint. You now have four quadrants. Ask which quadrant is busiest in darks, in saturation, in faces, in text, in hard edges. If one quadrant wins all of those, the picture is probably leaning unless a large empty field is doing counted work.
Step back until the object is a set of blobs. Squint. Colour and detail drop; value masses remain. Teachers still use this because it works. A “busy” painting that squints into two equal grey masses is symmetrically weighted in value even if the story is chaotic. A “simple” painting that squints into one black corner is not simple in the ledger.
Name the type tentatively. Pair of masses across a centre: start with symmetrical. Different masses that still sit: asymmetrical. Repeats around a point: radial. Even scatter: mosaic. Then hunt the exception. The exception is usually the meaning. Judas in the Last Supper. The dog in the Arnolfini. The tiny Fuji. The print beside Whistler’s mother. The yellow scrap in Mondrian.
Check reproduction lies. A book crop that loses a margin can invent imbalance. A raking gallery light can invent a glare blob. A mobile photographed from one side is a different work. For prints, check whether you are looking at one impression’s faded blue. For murals, check the date of the photograph against restoration history.
Write one sentence that a stranger could test: “The dark tabard and hat on the left are paid for by the red bed and the woman’s piled green on the right, with the mirror as axis.” If you cannot write that sentence, you do not yet have a reading.
Common confusions and misuses
The search box does not know which “balance” you mean. Work-life balance, nutritional balance, colour-mixing “balanced palettes” and gymnastic balance beams all compete. This page’s fence is visual. If a paragraph could sit in a wellness magazine, it is in the wrong article.
Composition is the parent task: placing the whole. Balance is one criterion inside that task. A composition can be balanced and still be dull, crowded, or spatially incoherent. Unity is a neighbour. A picture can be unified in palette and still list to the left. It can be balanced in masses and still feel like two pictures glued together. Emphasis is another neighbour: a strong focal point can be the heaviest object, or it can be a small light in a dark field. Visual movement is the path, not the scales. “Perfect symmetry” as praise is usually false for paintings of bodies. Reserve it for patterns, some architecture, and inkblots. “Asymmetry equals dynamism” is a slogan. Whistler’s Arrangement is asymmetrical and famously still. “Radial equals spiritual” is another slogan. A bicycle wheel is radial. Duchamp’s is a joke about that.
The fourth type, mosaic or crystallographic, gets abused in two directions. Some teachers deny it because their worksheet has three boxes. Some students dump it on any busy picture. Allover balance means the eye cannot find a single centre of gravity. A Baroque battle with a clear diagonal is not mosaic. Riley’s Movement in Squares is a hybrid: a grid with a pinch.
Do not treat the three types as a chronology. Chartres is radial in the thirteenth century. Hokusai is asymmetrical in the 1830s. Twenty-first-century altarpieces can still be bilateral. Date the object. Then name the strategy.

Does every good artwork have to be balanced?
No. Artists leave debts unpaid on purpose: a crop that throws you off the sheet, a stage crowded to one wing, a poster that wants panic. The term is still useful because you can describe the unpaid debt. “Unbalanced” only fails when it means “I have not looked.”
How is balance different from composition?

How do I tell symmetrical from asymmetrical balance?
If similar masses sit across a central axis (a Madonna between saints, a Last Supper with Christ on the vanishing point), start with symmetrical. If the objects differ in size, colour or emptiness and the field still sits (Hokusai’s wave, Whistler’s mother, Mondrian’s red corner), it is asymmetrical. Approximate symmetry still counts: van Eyck’s couple are not clones.
Why does Mondrian’s large red not unbalance the Zurich canvas?
The red is huge, but blue is denser, yellow is high in chroma, and the black bars plus the pale fields act as counted weights. The 1930 Kunsthaus picture (inv. 1987/0028) is not MoMA’s later 1937–42 canvas of a similar title. Count planes, not the largest patch alone.
