About

The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris is the City of Paris’s museum of modern and contemporary art and part of Paris Musées. Opened in 1961, it occupies the east wing of the Palais de Tokyo, built for the 1937 International Exhibition. Its collection of more than 15,000 works spans the 20th and 21st centuries and includes Raoul Dufy’s monumental mural La Fée Électricité and Henri Matisse’s La Danse. The permanent collection is free to visit, and the museum stages major temporary exhibitions as well as, until 2029, the Prix Marcel Duchamp.

What Artists Paint On

Canvas, panel, linen, paper, metal and wall: how painting supports are built, prepared, and why the wrong substrate fails decades later

A painting support is the surface paint adheres to: stretched linen, oak panel, watercolour paper, copper sheet, or lime plaster on a wall. This guide maps the main support types, how sizing and gesso prepare them, linen versus cotton weave, stretcher bars and panel cradling, named works in major museums, typical failure modes, and what each option costs in a studio today without turning into a gear catalogue.
