Florian Krewer: woven thin
The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris presents “Florian Krewer: woven thin”, the artist’s first solo exhibition in France. Sixteen monumental paintings, several of them never shown before, are installed within the permanent collection display. The exhibition follows the donation of several of Krewer’s works to the museum. Hung in a dense, carefully composed arrangement, they form a rich pictorial panorama that reflects the intensity of his practice and offers total immersion in his world. Krewer’s work is deeply autobiographical, shaped by a direct engagement with his surroundings in all their raw beauty and brutality. Drawing on lived experience and fantasy alike, the wide cast of characters who inhabit his ethereal landscapes and interiors are stripped of context and take on lives of their own. Dancers, performers, animals and solitary figures drift through shifting cityscapes, weightless and untethered, as if freed from the gravity of the physical world and its social constraints. Within these suspended worlds his paintings celebrate moments of intimacy and the resilience of community in often hostile environments. Born in Gerolstein, Germany, in 1986, Florian Krewer studied painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Recent museum exhibitions include Nice Dog at M WOODS Museum, Beijing (2023), everybody rise at the Aspen Art Museum (2023) and Es liebt Dich und Deine Körperlichkeit ein Verwirrter at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (2022). His work is held in the collections of the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, the Centre Pompidou, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum, LACMA and the Albertina in Vienna. In 2022 he received the Prix Jean-François Prat from the Bredin Prat Foundation. He lives and works in the South Bronx, New York. A catalogue published by VeneKlasen accompanies the exhibition.
