Art Basel Qatar Announces 2027 Exhibitor Line-Up and Expanded Support Framework

Curatorial shifts, high participant turnover, and new financial safeguards shape the second edition

A New Chapter for Art Basel Qatar

The second iteration of Art Basel Qatar is set to unfold across the M7 campus and the Doha Design District, running from 28 to 30 January 2027, with private previews scheduled for the preceding weekend. Organisers have confirmed a roster of eighty-two participating galleries, marking a modest contraction compared to the initial edition's eighty-seven strong contingent. Despite the slight reduction, the fair maintains its regional focus, with nearly half of the selected spaces operating within the MENASA territory. Standout presentations include Sylvia Kouvali introducing kinetic trailblazer Liliane Lijn, while Gagosian will showcase pieces by Maurizio Cattelan. Regional voices remain central, featuring Marfa' Projects presenting Stéphanie Saadé and India's Nature Morte highlighting sculptor Ayesha Singh.

Curatorial Direction and Market Shifts

This year's programming revolves around the concept of 'between', a framework devised by artistic director Wassan Al-Khudhairi. The Iraqi curator, formerly the founding head of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, succeeds Wael Shawky, who shaped the debut iteration. The selection panel comprises prominent figures such as Lorenzo Fischi, Gordon VeneKlasen, Daniela Gareh, Shireen Gandhy, Sunny Rahbar, and Mohammed Hafiz.

Participant movement remains pronounced, reflecting the fair's thematic approach. Approximately forty percent of last year's exhibitors are absent, encompassing major international houses like Hauser & Wirth, Pace, Almine Rech, and Victoria Miro, alongside Dubai-based Gallery Isabelle. Their departure creates space for thirty fresh entrants, including Buenos Aires and São Paulo's Isla Flotante, London's Pilar Corrias, and Manila/New York's Silverlens. Vincenzo De Bellis, global director of fairs at Art Basel, noted that such fluctuations align with the event's theme-driven model, where solo proposals must directly engage with the annual conceptual brief.

Geopolitical Context and Operational Safeguards

Planning this edition occurs against a backdrop of heightened regional instability. Visitors should note recent military activity near Saudi Arabia and ongoing diplomatic friction involving Iran, echoing incidents from early last year when missile strikes caused casualties and airspace closures. To address potential disruptions, the organiser has established clear protocols: should the event face postponement or significant restructuring, participants may claim full refunds or transfer their allocation to the 2028 cycle. Premature withdrawals outside these parameters will incur standard penalties.

Financial backing from Qatar Sports Investments and QC+ continues to ease logistical burdens. Covered expenses range from customs processing and local freight to consolidated warehousing and on-site rigging. Accommodation for two personnel per booth, plus travel and lodging for featured creators, remains subsidised. Additionally, the 2027 iteration introduces a novel incentive covering half of outbound freight charges for unpurchased inventory, capped at twenty thousand dollars per dealer.

Beyond the Fair Week

Organisational ambitions extend past the three-day window. A year-round programme aims to cultivate collector networks through educational seminars and hands-on sessions throughout the calendar year. Chief executive Noah Horowitz emphasised that sustained market development requires consistent engagement rather than isolated annual gatherings. Attendees will also encounter Rubaiya, a four-yearly survey gathering over one hundred and twenty practitioners, among them Saodat Ismailova and Rirkrit Tiravanija. The complete roster of returning and departing dealers follows the main report.
