About the work

Next Caller draws on the language of call-in broadcasts, a recurring reference in Al-Obaidi's work, which has revisited archival Kuwaiti television. Painted for Frogs, Jazz & Blisters, her debut solo exhibition, the work belongs to a body of paintings about living between London and Kuwait, or 'being two Dalals'. The composition captures a suspended moment of waiting to be heard, blurring the personal and the collective.
