About this district

Old Muscat is the walled original city — a small bowl of ground held between the Gulf on one side and bare volcanic hills on the other, sealed off from the modern sprawl by ridgelines and old gates. It is the densest concentration of cultural weight in the country: the national flagship museum, a much-loved private heritage house with a contemporary gallery inside it, the ceremonial royal palace, and two Portuguese-era forts standing over the harbour. Everything sits within a short walk. The scale is contained. The sense of arrival is complete.
