Karima Shomely: Between a Fold and a Memory
Leila Heller Gallery Dubai presents Between a Fold and a Memory, an exhibition by Emirati artist, visual researcher and educator Dr. Karima Al Shomely, on view in Alserkal Avenue from 23 September to 10 November 2026. Al Shomely’s research focuses on Islamic geometry and the heritage iconography of Emirati women. The exhibition brings together a series of photographic prints — among them Bu Harara, Bu Alnaf, Bu Galim, Bu Khahil, Bu Nasieh, Bu Warda, Bu Tayla, Bu Tarah and Sultani — large-scale prints on aluminium from 2022, and a group of aluminium sculptures bearing the same names. Her prints, photographs, paintings and installations have been exhibited widely in the UAE and internationally, including “Buqshe” at the University of Exeter (2025), “Their Stories” at ECC, Venice (2024) and “Sahhara Hidden Adornments” at Maraya Art Centre, Sharjah (2022).
