About this district

An industrial pocket by the port, north of Gemmayzeh, that holds Beirut's heaviest commercial gallery — and, with it, the register of the international art market. Karantina (Quarantine) is warehouses, workshops and the odd loft-scale white cube, gritty and working rather than pretty, its upper floors opening onto arresting views over the Beirut River and Achrafieh's slopes. This is where the city's blue-chip contemporary art is shown. The setting is raw. The programme is serious.
