Biography
Bertram Hasenauer (born 1970 in Saalfelden, Austria) is an Austrian painter and draughtsman who lives and works in Berlin. He studied from 1992 to 1997 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the master class of Franz Xaver Ölzant, and continued his studies at the Berlin University of the Arts and, in 1997–98, at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. He has received an Austrian Federal Chancellery working grant (1997), a studio residency in Kraków (1999), the Austrian State Grant for Fine Arts (2005) and a residency in Paliano, Italy (2009). The portrait and the human figure lie at the centre of his practice, understood not as a likeness but as the 'idea of a figure'. His androgynous, often melancholic figures appear against monochrome white or dark grounds, alongside landscapes and text works. Applying paint in very thin films over finely textured grounds, or drawing in graphite on black surfaces, he explores the threshold where perception gives way to memory and imagination.
