About the work
Named after the spider trickster of West African folklore, Ananse is here imagined as a woman rather than a spider. Her face, rendered in delicate layers of thin pigment, appears almost unfinished, as if part of it had been erased or folded out of view – an absence the viewer instinctively completes.
