James Turrell

James Turrell

Almine Rech New York presents James Turrell's thirteenth solo exhibition with the gallery, marking more than three decades of collaboration. Bringing together more than fifteen works, the exhibition includes a Shallow Space, pieces from the Glassworks series, and a Cross Corner work. These new additions to landmark bodies of work extend Turrell's tireless exploration of space and light, inviting viewers to pay close attention to their own senses. In 1989 Almine Rech organized Turrell's first gallery exhibition in Europe, presenting a Light Piece titled Blood Lust at her gallery in Paris. More than thirty years later, this exhibition testifies to the enduring relationship between artist and gallery, and to Turrell's continuing devotion to the guiding principle of his work: perception. Turrell has worked with light as his medium since the 1960s. A central figure of the Southern California Light and Space movement, he has created sculpted, seemingly solid blocks of pure light, rooms bathed in slowly shifting light, and altered architecture that frames the ever-changing sky. Each work offers an opportunity to be immersed in a contemplative, sensory environment that turns our attention to the very act of seeing.
