Expanded Tradition

Contemporary Craft Practices in Mexico

Expanded Tradition

Presented by Qatar Museums and Years of Culture as a headline programme of the Qatar Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture, Expanded Tradition traces the continuity of Mexico's craft heritage while examining how a new generation of makers reinterprets inherited techniques, materials and forms. Curated by Ana Elena Mallet (Tecnológico de Monterrey), with exhibition design by Mexico City–based LANZA Atelier, the show focuses on artisanal process rather than finished objects and unfolds across five sections: Inheriting the Gesture, Material Fictions, Imagined Territories, Wearing Identity and Inhabiting Ancestral Futures. More than 100 objects are featured, by artisans working across dress-making and textiles, jewellery, furniture design and pottery, including Erandine de Saint Phalle Navarro, Elizabeth Rangel Roque, Naaz Zepeda and Chus Chilol, Rodrigo de la Cruz Cabrera, Ever Jesús Arellanes Luna and Esperanza Martínez Velasco.
