About this district

Muttrah is the old port quarter, strung along a curving harbour just west of Old Muscat — a waterfront corniche backed by a dense warren of lanes and one of the finest traditional souqs in the Gulf. It carries the working, mercantile side of Muscat's history, and its cultural life is woven through that fabric: a history museum in a restored merchant house, a modern-art museum near the fort, and craft and calligraphy studios tucked into the souq. A Portuguese fort watches from the headland. The pace is unhurried by day and comes alive at dusk. The salt and the trade are still in the air.
