About this district

A planned oil town near the centre of the island, built by the Bahrain Petroleum Company, holding the heritage of the country's oil era. Awali is a green company town of mid-century housing laid out for oil workers, on UNESCO's tentative list as an oil-settlement heritage site. This is a district for industrial and modern heritage rather than fine art — the story of the resource that transformed Bahrain. The register is industrial heritage.
