About this district

The intellectual heart of West Beirut, built around Hamra Street and the campus of the American University of Beirut, and long the city's hub of students, writers and café culture. Hamra is bookshops, theatres, cinemas and a mix of galleries threaded through a dense, busy, cosmopolitan grid that runs down toward the seafront Corniche. It carries the memory of Beirut's mid-century golden age and remains its most bookish, argumentative quarter. The pace is urban. The culture is verbal as much as visual.
