About the work
Mughal period, c. 1880, Northern India. Qatar Museums / Museum of Islamic Art, Doha. This jewelled and enamelled turban ornament, known as a sarpech, was worn at the front of the turban as a visible marker of status in Mughal India. Its form, extending across the head, draws attention to the wearer while displaying the jeweller's skill in working gold, enamel and precious stones; such ornaments became highly recognisable signs of rank, their scale and craftsmanship reinforcing the authority and prestige of those who wore them. Shown in Around the World in Jewellery at M7, Doha.
