About the work
20th century, Guangxi, China. Qatar Museums / National Collection of Qatar, Doha. Silversmithing is a central pillar of Miao cultural identity, and silver adornment is worn in great profusion at festivals and weddings; a bride's silver forms an important part of her personal wealth and is passed down through generations. This dramatic apron-like necklace is composed of six tiers, each terminating in dynamic spirals, centred by a sun in mirror image on either side and flanked by dragons and fantastical creatures. Shown in Around the World in Jewellery at M7, Doha.
