Biography

Rana Begum (b. 1977, Sylhet, Bangladesh) lives and works in London. Her work explores the interplay between light and colour, blurring the boundaries between sculpture, painting and architecture. Drawing on the urban landscape and on the geometric patterns of traditional Islamic art and architecture, she works across metal, glass, stone, paper, wood and textiles, each material absorbing or reflecting light to create an experience that is both temporal and sensorial. Begum holds a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design and an MFA in Painting from the Slade School of Fine Art. Her first museum solo exhibition, Space Light Colour, opened at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in 2017 before travelling to the Djanogly Gallery, Nottingham. Further solo exhibitions include Boundless Geometry at The Farjam Collection, Dubai (2026), Reflection at SCAD Museum of Art (2025), Dappled Light at The Box, Plymouth (2023), Infinite Geometry at Wanås Konst (2021), A Conversation with Light and Form at Tate St Ives (2018) and The Space Between at Parasol Unit, London (2016). She has taken part in the Taipei Biennial, Desert X, the Folkestone Triennial and the Vienna Biennale, and her work is held in collections including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Ashmolean Museum, QAGOMA, MONA, the Arts Council Collection, the Royal Academy of Arts, the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, the Ishara Art Foundation and the Samdani Art Foundation.
