Hugo Wilson

Biography
Hugo Wilson (born 1982 in London) is a British artist who lives and works in London. At seventeen he moved to Florence to train as a painter at the Charles H. Cecil Studios (2000–2004), and in 2008 he received a Master's degree from the City and Guilds of London Art School. His classical training and close engagement with the Old Masters inform a practice that moves fluidly between painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture, executed with exacting craftsmanship – often in oil on carefully prepared wooden panels built up in many layers. Wilson's work combines this historical repertoire with contemporary imagery, questioning how images acquire meaning and how inherited hierarchies of subject and genre persist today. He has had solo exhibitions at Parafin in London, Project B in Milan and Mihai Nicodim Gallery in Los Angeles, and has shown repeatedly with Galerie Judin in Berlin.
