About
The museum educates, inspires, and empowers people through design by advancing public understanding via dynamic exhibitions, stimulating programming, and online learning resources. It aims to create provocative dialogues around design, amplify its historical continuum, and honor innovation through initiatives like the National Design Awards and academic partnerships such as the Master’s Program in the History of Design and Curatorial Studies with Parsons School of Design.
Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum is the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to historical and contemporary design, housed in New York City's landmark Carnegie Mansion. Founded in 1897 by Sarah and Eleanor Hewitt, it stewards a permanent collection of more than 215,000 design objects spanning 30 centuries, ranging from ancient textiles to cutting-edge technologies. The institution offers four floors of galleries, a world-class design library, and interactive creative technologies for public exploration.
