Shaikha Al Mazrou

Solo exhibition

Save show

Cultural Foundation presents a solo exhibition by Emirati artist Shaikha Al Mazrou, one of the most dynamic sculptors of her generation in the UAE. Bringing together existing sculptures alongside a group of new commissions created for the occasion, the exhibition traces the artist's sustained investigation into materiality, gravity and spatial tension. Al Mazrou works with industrial and mass-produced materials such as steel, copper, textiles and inflated forms, testing their physical limits to create abstract geometric arrangements that appear to defy their own weight. Drawing formally on minimalism and intellectually on conceptual art, and informed by the colour theory and geometric abstraction of the Modernist and Bauhaus movements, her works materialise as simple yet charged gestures: surfaces that seem soft but are rigid, volumes that appear heavy yet hover, and structures held in precarious balance. Installed across the galleries of Cultural Foundation, the works invite visitors to move around and between them, becoming aware of their own bodies in relation to mass, void and the space in between. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to encounter the breadth of Al Mazrou's practice in Abu Dhabi, from early experiments to ambitious new pieces that extend her exploration of form, tension and perception.
