Curatorial Ethos
Ashkal Alwan fosters critical thinking around social realities and civic engagement through interdisciplinary artistic practices, aiming to create sustainable networks between practitioners, institutions, and the local community. Its mission emphasizes rethinking arts education, archiving cultural endeavors, and supporting independent initiatives that operate outside political and market hegemonies.
Ashkal Alwan (The Lebanese Association for Plastic Arts) is a non-profit cultural organization based in Beirut, founded in 1993 to promote contemporary artistic research, production, and education. Since 2011, it has operated the Home Workspace, a 2,000m² multipurpose facility featuring studios, an auditorium, editing suites, and Lebanon’s first multimedia library for contemporary arts. The organization runs annual programs including the tuition-free Home Workspace Program for emerging artists, the multidisciplinary Home Works Forum, and various residency and publication initiatives.
