About this district

The walled ancient heart of Damascus — one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban cores on earth, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Inside the Roman-era walls lie the Umayyad Mosque, the covered souqs, the Azm Palace, the Citadel and a warren of stone lanes and courtyard houses, with the central Qaymariya quarter and its markets folded in. This is heritage at the deepest level — layer upon layer of Aramaean, Roman, Byzantine, Umayyad and Ottoman Damascus in a single square kilometre. The register is antiquity and living history, not the contemporary gallery scene.
