About this district

A long historic district stretching south from the old walled city — the quarter that grew along the Road to Mecca, and one of the most atmospheric heritage neighbourhoods of Damascus. Al-Midan is Ottoman and Mamluk mosques, old khans, traditional food shops and a strong sense of the city's role as the "Gateway to the Hajj." This is heritage and living tradition rather than galleries — a district defined by pilgrimage history and Damascene craft and cuisine. The register is heritage and everyday devotion.
