The seafront stretch east of the centre, holding the Bibliotheca Alexandrina — a tilted granite disc set into the ground like a second sun rising from the Mediterranean, its outer wall carved with characters from more than 120 writing systems. Inside: rotating contemporary galleries, four museums, a planetarium and the largest reading room in the world when it was built.
