Sojourner 2

About the work

Sojourner 2 is a tall, elongated figure assembled from a weathered railway sleeper and mild steel. Otieno leaves the timber's bolt holes, cracks and weathering visible, allowing the material's long history of bearing weight beneath East Africa's railways to become part of the sculpture's language. Standing nearly two and a half metres high, the work hovers between abstraction and figuration, evoking a traveller through time — the 'sojourner' that gives Otieno's first solo exhibition at Efie Gallery its title.
