About the work
Dhaka 1217 is a series of 135 black-and-white photographs made between 2011 and 2026, a selection of which is shown at Ishara. Sarker Protick documents the transformation of a one-square-mile radius around the Dhaka neighbourhood where he was born and still lives, presenting the city as contested terrain where social, ecological and personal histories converge. The complete series forms the basis of a forthcoming book of the same title. Presented in The sky held it, the earth remembered at Ishara Art Foundation, an exhibition on land, water and the cosmos as living archives of memory and ecological change.
