Biography

Safeya Binzagr (1940–2024) was a pioneering Saudi artist from Jeddah, among the first Saudi women to hold public exhibitions in the 1960s and 70s. Trained in Cairo and at Saint Martin’s School of Art in London, she devoted her career to documenting the traditional dress, architecture, customs and daily life of the Hejaz in paintings, drawings and etchings, and founded Darat Safeya Binzagr in Jeddah in 2000 as a museum and cultural centre.
