Biography

Sabine Moritz (born 1969 in Quedlinburg, Germany) is a German painter who lives and works in Cologne. Working in both abstraction and figuration, on canvas and on paper, she draws on history, mythology and poetry, interweaving personal memory – including recollections of growing up in the GDR – with collective experience. Her early work was largely based on photographs and newspaper cuttings, while over the past decade intuitive, gestural abstraction has come to dominate her painting, with figures re-emerging in her canvases since 2023. Solo exhibitions of her work have been held at Le Château in Aubenas and the Olivia Foundation in Mexico City (both 2025), Kunsthalle Rostock (2019), Kunstverein Bremerhaven (2017) and the Von der Heydt-Kunsthalle in Wuppertal-Barmen (2014). Her works are held in collections including The Broad, Los Angeles; Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf; Lenbachhaus, Munich; LACMA; SFMOMA; and Tate, London.
