Biography

Katharina Sieverding (born 16 November 1941) is a German artist and photographer known above all for her large-format self-portraits. She studied at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where she was a student of Joseph Beuys during the protest movements of the late 1960s. Her early 16mm film Life–Death (1969), set to a soundtrack recorded by Kraftwerk, was shown at documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972. Combining performance, photography and film, Sieverding has explored identity, gender, the body and the political power of images since the late 1960s, often through monumental photographic tableaux. She lives and works in Berlin and Düsseldorf and is professor emerita at the Berlin University of the Arts.
