Kader Attia and Elizabeth Peyton are the Louvre’s Hosts for 2024–2026. Kader Attia (born 1970 in Dugny, France; lives and works in Paris and Berlin) is known for work that sits at the frontier between form and thought, between logical inquiry and contemporary ideas. Elizabeth Peyton (born 1965 in Connecticut, United States; lives and works in Paris and New York) brings painting vividly to life through portraiture. For two years they inhabited the physical and imaginary spaces of the Louvre, each with a studio in the museum, where they made work, talked with staff and met the public. Former studio neighbours, they now share the temporary exhibition space of the Salle de la Chapelle, where the results of their residencies are on view. Attia presents a film and an installation inspired by his own intimate wanderings through the Louvre, reflecting on the shifting of eras, memories and gazes and turning his own way of seeing into a subject. Peyton shows paintings and drawings that combine reinterpretations of works in the Louvre – something she has done since her early years as an artist – with depictions of historical and contemporary subjects made in her studio at the museum. Their intersecting readings of the Louvre reveal the wealth of resources the museum and its collections offer as a source of inspiration for artists and visitors alike. The exhibition is conceived by Donatien Grau and Nicolas Marbeau in dialogue with the artists.
