Dubai Creek: Birth of a City

Where the city began

The museum's signature pavilion and, for many visitors, its highlight — an immersive audio-visual experience produced by the studio Empty that tells how Dubai grew up around the khor, the creek that gave the city its start. It frames the waterway not as backdrop but as origin: the point from which trade and modern society took root, and the site of the city's firsts — its first bank, its first police post, its first produce market. Through an immersive film and digital displays, it follows the merchants, tradesmen, seafarers and boat builders who built businesses and raised families along the water, and whose skills — honed against extreme conditions — set the whole society on its path to prosperity. Thematically part of the Governance & Society cluster, it makes the case that to understand Dubai you have to start at the creek, and it works as the narrative anchor the rest of the museum branches out from.
