The museum presents the full range of Islamic visual culture, from courtly luxury to domestic craft, and keeps one of the world's most comprehensive collections open to researchers and visitors on the Corniche.
The Museum of Islamic Art opened in 2008 as one of Qatar Museums' first major projects. I. M. Pei designed the building to rise from Doha Bay at the southern end of the Corniche, with views across the waterfront and the surrounding MIA Park. The collection holds masterpieces from the 7th to the 20th centuries gathered from three continents, including metalwork, ceramics, jewellery, woodwork, textiles, manuscripts, coins and glass from royal treasuries and everyday homes. Permanent galleries are arranged by period, geography and theme. The MIA Library holds more than 21,000 volumes on Islamic art.
