Khalifa’s Wife is an oil painting on canvas made in 1968 by Dia al-Azzawi, one of Iraq’s leading modern artists and a member of the generation that built on the legacy of the Baghdad Modern Art Group. Its stylised figures and flattened, patterned forms reflect the group’s ambition to join local cultural references with the language of global modernism. The painting is included in What Lingers in the Artist Mind as an example of the group’s influence on later generations of Iraqi artists.
