Tapestry and batik weaving by Harrania artists since 1951; sculpture of Habib Gorgi's school

About

The Art Centre carries on Ramses Wissa Wassef's conviction that artistic creativity is innate in everyone and can flourish when given freedom.

Founded in 1951 by the architect Ramses Wissa Wassef (1911–1974), the Art Centre in Harrania near Giza was built in traditional mud-brick vaulted architecture and received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Children from the village were taught to weave without preliminary drawings, developing a distinctive tradition of wool and cotton tapestries coloured with natural dyes grown on site; a batik group has worked under Johanna Wissa Wassef since 1974. The centre includes active workshops, a tapestry museum completed in 1989 tracing the development of individual weavers, the Habib Gorgi Museum of figurative sculpture (1971), a gallery selling new tapestries, batiks and ceramics, and gardens. Its tapestries are in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Why this museum matters

Exhibo editorial

Harrania, on the Saqqara road, among fields and canals: a compound of mud-brick domes and vaults the architect Ramses Wissa Wassef built from 1951 to prove a single idea — that creativity is innate in everyone. He gave village children looms and no drawings, and let them weave what they saw: birds, harvests, the Nile, the trees outside. Seventy years later the second and third generations still work here, with wool dyed from plants grown in the garden, and the tapestries hang in the Metropolitan Museum, the British Museum and the V&A. A domed museum of 1989 shows the early masterpieces; another, from 1971, holds the clay figures of Habib Gorgi's students. Few places in Egypt show so clearly what modern art and village craft can be to each other.
