Adam Henein Museum

The work of sculptor Adam Henein (1929–2020)

About

The museum preserves and presents the life's work of Adam Henein and the dialogue it holds between modern sculpture and Egypt's ancient traditions.

The Adam Henein Museum occupies the former home and studio of the Egyptian sculptor Adam Henein in Harrania, near Giza. Opened by the artist in 2014, it holds more than 4,000 of his works — sculpture in bronze, granite and wood, paintings, drawings and works on papyrus — in galleries and a sculpture garden. Henein, one of the defining figures of modern Egyptian sculpture, led the restoration of the Great Sphinx between 1989 and 1998 and founded the Aswan International Sculpture Symposium in 1996.

Why this museum matters

Exhibo editorial

Harrania, on the edge of the fields below Saqqara, a few minutes from the Wissa Wassef weaving school. This was Adam Henein's house and studio, and in 2014 he opened it himself as a museum: more than 4,000 works — granite and bronze, paintings on papyrus, drawings — and a garden where the sculptures stand in the open air. Henein is the sculptor who led the restoration of the Sphinx from 1989 to 1998 and founded the Aswan International Sculpture Symposium, which still sends granite into the world every year. Here you see where those two lives met: a modern artist who spent decades with the oldest stone in Egypt. One of the few places in Cairo where a major artist's whole career is in one building.
