The gallery's programme focuses on bridging historical avant-garde movements with contemporary practices, presenting a broad range of works that introduce both established international figures and emerging Japanese talent to global audiences through exhibitions, art fairs, and publications.
MAKI Gallery was established in Tokyo in 2003 with an initial focus on promoting seminal avant-garde Japanese artists of the 1950s-60s, later shifting to emerging contemporary artists. The gallery operates two locations: a head office in Omotesando, Shibuya-ku, opened in 2014, and an expansive museum-caliber space in Tennoz, Shinagawa-ku, opened in 2020. It presents works by internationally active artists such as Mungo Thomson and Miya Ando, while introducing younger Japanese artists like Anne Kagioka Rigoulet and Keisuke Tada to a global audience.
