Curatorial Ethos
4649 functions as a platform aimed at fostering exchange between contemporary art scenes in Tokyo and other cities, based on projects rooted in the interests of each artist's practice. Its on-site programme focuses on introducing emerging international artists to the Tokyo art scene, while off-site projects actively exhibit Tokyo-based artists internationally.
4649 is a curatorial project and gallery space in Sugamo, Tokyo, founded in 2018 by artists Yuhei Kobayashi, Shogo Shimizu, and Yuu Takamizawa. Established as a successor to the artist-run space Workstation, it operates as a co-located venue with XYZ Collective, alternating exhibitions between the two entities. The space presents a programme of solo and group shows featuring both local and international emerging artists.
