Curatorial Ethos

Goodman Gallery operates as a hybrid model anchored in core values of free expression and respect for complex social contexts, fostering community and critical dialogue through ambitious curatorial initiatives both within and beyond its represented roster. Its programme focuses on shaping artistic discourse in the Global North while remaining rooted in the Global South, featuring rigorous exhibitions, museum commissions, and public programmes like Goodman Screenings.

Founded in Johannesburg in 1966 by Linda Givon, Goodman Gallery is a leading international contemporary art gallery with locations in Cape Town, Johannesburg, London, and New York. Under the leadership of Liza Essers since 2008, it has evolved into a globally engaged cultural platform representing over forty artists from across Africa and the Global South. The gallery is recognized as one of the oldest on the African continent and the longest-running African participant at Art Basel.
