The gallery serves as an intersection of African and Western cultures, initially focusing on southern Africa before broadening its scope to fulfill its name's evocation of cultural exchange. It aims to reshape narratives surrounding art and artists of African descent, acting as a pivotal force in postcolonial discourse and providing platforms for South African and broader African artists.
Axis Gallery was founded in Manhattan in 1997 as the only US gallery promoting both classical and contemporary African art. The gallery operates a project-oriented program that combines occasional exhibitions in New York with international fairs, while also concentrating on placing artists in institutional settings through residencies and collaborations. Classical African art is shown by appointment only at its New Jersey location, emphasizing museum-quality pieces from southern and eastern Africa.
