Curatorial Ethos
Al Riwaq’s curatorial ethos centres on nurturing emerging and established practices while positioning Bahrain within regional and global contemporary art discourse. The programme prioritises experimental, conceptual, and research-based works across painting, installation, video, and design, complemented by a strong commitment to public art activation, artistic mentorship, and accessible educational initiatives.
Al Riwaq Art Space is a non-profit arts organisation and cultural campus located in the historic Bank House in Al Gufool, Manama, Bahrain. Founded in 1998 by Bayan Al Barrak Kanoo, it has evolved from a commercial gallery into a premier hub supporting contemporary art and design through year-round exhibitions, artist residencies, alternative education programmes, and public festivals. The space operates as an open-access venue featuring a café, art library, co-working areas, and studio facilities to foster community engagement and creative exchange.
