Curatorial Ethos

Luxor Art Gallery is a permanent exhibition space dedicated to local contemporary art: it showcases the living artists of Luxor and Upper Egypt, presents new and international talent, and serves as a meeting point for artists, students, Egyptologists, families and visitors.

Luxor Art Gallery opened in November 2018 on Luxor's West Bank, opposite the Colossi of Memnon. It was founded and is curated by the American artist Dominique Navarro, an epigraphic artist with the University of Chicago's Epigraphic Survey and the American Research Center in Egypt and an Emmy-winning art director for documentary television. The gallery has shown work by more than 75 artists — painters, sculptors and photographers from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Luxor and beyond, as well as international artists living in the city — through group and solo exhibitions, workshops, field trips and music events.

Why this gallery matters

Exhibo editorial

Memnon Street on the West Bank, within sight of the two colossi of Amenhotep III — a small sunny courtyard where nobody comes for the pharaohs. Dominique Navarro arrived in Luxor to draw ancient walls for the University of Chicago's Epigraphic Survey and noticed what the city lacked: a place for the artists who live there now. She opened one in 2018. Since then more than 75 painters, sculptors and photographers have shown here, many from Luxor's Faculty of Fine Arts; exhibitions like Roots, made with Humans of Upper Egypt, turn the Sa'idi everyday into the subject. In a city that sells only the past, a gallery for the present.
