Bernar Venet (b. 1941, Château-Arnoux, France) is a French conceptual artist best known for his steel sculptures that appear to defy gravity. At 17 he moved to Nice to work as a set designer for the Opéra de Nice. In the 1960s he developed his Tar paintings, Relief cartons and 'Tas de charbon' (Pile of Coal, 1963). In 1966 he settled in New York, exploring painting, poetry, film and performance. From 1979 he created wood reliefs, Arcs, Angles, Straight Lines and the first of his Indeterminate Lines. Milestones include twelve Indeterminate Lines on the Champ de Mars, Paris (1994), a solo exhibition at the Château de Versailles (2011), the nearly 200-foot 'Arc Majeur' in Belgium (2019) and a major retrospective at Kunsthalle Berlin (2022). He participated in Documenta VI (1977) and the Biennales of Paris, Venice and São Paulo.
