Curatorial Ethos
AWC Contemporary is a commercial gallery in Gate Avenue, DIFC, founded in 2021 by Turkish art collector Haldun Kilit. The programme bridges international and UAE-based artists — emerging and established — across painting, sculpture and installation, with a particular focus on Turkish and MENA contemporary art. The gallery participates in major international fairs including Contemporary Istanbul and Art D'Égypte, and maintains an artist residency programme alongside its Dubai exhibition calendar. AWC Istanbul opened in 2024, with further planned locations in the UK, USA, CIS and MENA regions by 2030.
Why this gallery matters
Exhibo editorial
AWC opened in DIFC in 2021, founded by Turkish businessman and art collector Haldun Kilit. The name stands for Art, World, Community — which is either a mission statement or an accurate description of what the gallery actually does: it sits at the intersection of Turkish, UAE and international art scenes in a way that few spaces in Dubai manage. The programme moves between its DIFC home and fairs across Istanbul, Cairo and beyond. AWC has participated in Art D'Égypte at the Pyramids of Giza, shown at Contemporary Istanbul, and built an artist residency programme alongside its exhibition calendar. By 2024 it was already opening in Istanbul, and the ambition by 2030 is galleries in the UK, USA, CIS and MENA. For a gallery that started in Dubai three years ago, the footprint is already unusually wide.
