Curatorial Ethos
-
AVA Gallery is a commercial gallery in Warehouse 64, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai, representing mid-career and established artists with a particular focus on contemporary Iranian and Iranian-diaspora practice. The programme engages with questions of identity, memory and cultural displacement across painting, photography, textile and mixed media.
Why this gallery matters
Exhibo editorial
AVA Gallery occupies Warehouse 64 on Alserkal Avenue — a space that has chosen its artists carefully enough to invite Behrang Samadzadegan not just to show work but to curate. That distinction matters. Samadzadegan is a painter, critic and curator based between Tehran and Dubai who has exhibited at Leila Heller Gallery, Mohsen Gallery and internationally across Europe and the Americas. When AVA asked him to organise Now, Still We Gather, they were inviting someone whose curatorial instinct is as developed as his studio practice — and whose relationship to Iranian contemporary art is both deeply personal and rigorously critical. The programme that has emerged around AVA reflects that sensibility: Iranian and Iranian-diaspora artists working across photography, painting, textile and mixed media, presented in a warehouse space on an avenue that has always made room for practices that don't arrive with institutional backing already in place.
