Curatorial Ethos
Zawya Cinema operates with the aim of filling a gap in Cairo’s cinematic and cultural landscape by promoting independent film culture. Its programme focuses on supporting and promoting the work of emerging Egyptian and Arab filmmakers through dedicated screenings and festival events.
Zawya Cinema was established in 2014 as one of the first independent cinemas in Egypt, located in Downtown Cairo. It screens a diverse selection of films from around the world, including features, shorts, documentaries, experimental works, and retrospectives. The venue hosts various festivals throughout the year, such as the Manassat Film Festival, and places a strong emphasis on local independent films to support emerging Egyptian and Arab filmmakers.
