Elmgreen & Dragset: TRANSITION
With TRANSITION, Elmgreen & Dragset unveil one of the most ambitious projects of their career at Pace's West 25th Street galleries in New York: a 40-ton steel sculpture that visitors can walk through, presented alongside a new series of wall works. Together they extend the duo's longstanding fascination with the performative dimension of architecture—the ways buildings and built spaces script how we move, behave, and relate to one another. Michael Elmgreen (born 1961 in Copenhagen, Denmark) and Ingar Dragset (born 1969 in Trondheim, Norway) have worked together since the mid-1990s, probing questions of identity and belonging and examining the social, cultural, and political structures that shape everyday life. They are known for large-scale public works including Short Cut (2003), in which a Fiat Uno and a camper trailer appear to burst up through the ground; Prada Marfa (2005), a full-scale replica of a Prada boutique standing alone beside U.S. Route 90 near Valentine, Texas; and Van Gogh's Ear (2016), a giant swimming pool stood on its end in front of Rockefeller Center in New York.
