Afrah Shafiq: Nobody Knows For Certain

A multimedia game on Soviet children’s books in India

Afrah Shafiq: Nobody Knows For Certain

Afrah Shafiq’s multimedia game Nobody Knows For Certain explores a little-known chapter of Cold War cultural exchange: the richly illustrated Soviet children’s books translated into Indian languages and sold widely across India from the 1960s to the 1980s. Built from a Garage Museum research fellowship, the artist’s own archive and oral testimonies, the work blends interactive fiction, documentary and point-and-click adventure, inviting players to collect books, travel through portals between tales, and trace visual links to Lubok prints, lacquer miniatures, folk embroidery and Soviet avant-garde design.
